X-35 ISAF Recognized Class

One year after its launch

A Torpedo Start for the X-35 One Design

Even before the X-35 hit the water, X-Yachts had already set out to establish a strong and tightly controlled One Design Class, and had started work on the Class Rules with the support of ISAF. The reward came during the Annual ISAF Conference in Helsinki, when the X-35 was given Recognized Class Status, only one year after its launch!

200 X-35s before Summer 2007

Since the launch and test sail during December 2005, a lot has happened in the X-35 Class. During the spring and summer 2006, X-Yachts delivered ninety X-35s to their new owners, who started sailing straight away in order to get familiar with their new X-Yachts baby. Before summer 2007 a fleet of 200 X-35s will be competing around the world.

The first X-35 World Championship will be held in Kiel

Forty boats are expected to participate in the X-35 Worlds from 19 to 24 June 2007. The Championship will be held in Kiel, Germany during the “Kieler Woche”. No doubt competition in the 2007 X-35 World Championship will be fierce!

One Design Racing

In many countries the One Design fleet has grown quickly: in Holland, Switzerland, Italy and Germany, to mention just a few; and several of these fleets started their exciting racing experience, supported by local sponsorships from AUDI and BMW.

Handicap Racing

Not only has One Design racing had a torpedo start but, in handicap fleets, the X-35 also made its mark in 2006. In the UK, the X-35 won the largest Class, with twenty-seven competitors in the Warsash Spring Series against strong competition under IRC. In Italy, the X-35 came third overall under IMS, against much larger yachts, such as GS 42, First 44.7 etc. and, finally, in Norway, the X-35 won the Faerdern Race overall. This is Norway’s largest race, with more than 1100 competitors and sailed under the LYS handicap system.

First International X-35 Cup

The X-35 Gold Cup was held in Medemblik, Holland in August 2006 and there was an excellent turnout, with twenty-four competitors from five nations. The first International One Design Cup was dominated by the Dutch sailors, who had trained together all spring. Peter Bolvig, from Denmark, came third; and Dirk Manno, from Germany, came sixth.

X-35s in Japan, USA and Australia

The Class has continued its development and expansion both in size and throughout the world. National Classes are now established in most European countries, whilst further afield Japan already has a strong fleet of eight boats.
